Abstract
How could motorsports look like in the future?
Will it get faster, more dynamic and even more daredevil or in a new revolutionary way, we haven’t experienced so far? Dealing with these questions was the topic of my degree project.
My biggest challenge was to design not only the vehicle but also the whole scenario around this idea of creating a new motorsport. Different motorsport, different vehicles, and different rules.
Inspiration
What is so different in 3athlon-motorsport scene?
Every motorsport nowadays takes place at one track. Only a single type of vehicle drives the track. The relationship between the race-event and the viewer is quite passive.
To design the whole race-event more dynamic, breathtaking and more audience-friendly, I decided to set up the races on three different tracks, on which one driver has to steer three different types of vehicle. The whole idea is inspired by the sport triathlon, in which the contenders have to exercise three different types of sport. The triathlon is the celebration of human power and the 3athlon motorsport is the celebration of human skills.
To involve the viewers more active into the whole race event, I decided to give them more active role into the race.
Method
The rules are set. Three different vehicles on three different tracks (sky-, sea- and terrain track). Instead of designing a vehicle with a complicated transforming system, I decided to design a modular system, which can modify a core body into one of the three needed vehicles.
The capsule, the core body, communicates a clean and minimalistic feeling, which is captured in a long floating organic shape. This neutral basic shape language makes it possible of generating three different vehicles by not losing the coherent feeling between them.
The three types of body kits are used for modifying the capsule. Each body kit is used for a different purpose but this shouldn’t be a reason for not having a united compact design language. The body kits don’t look too overpowered in contrast to the capsule. The contrary is the case. Each body kit almost looks like it is taking on the minimal and clean look of the capsule and continues it, or almost growing out with its own interpretation.
Result
The 3athlon motorsport will set a new benchmark in the motorsport scene. Inspired by the sport triathlon, it is a first of its kind, revolutionary in a near green future. It will be the first motorsport, in which a driver has to steer three different kinds of vehicles in one race event. It’s a demonstration or even a celebration of the infinite capacity of our physical and psychological skill.
Another revolutionary step forward for the motorsport history is the feature that the viewers actually can step in into the race and be part of it by generating the boost energy for their favourite driver, by screaming and cheering into one of the many devices, which are set up along the track sides. The drivers then can pick up the additional boost energy from his fans by driving past the device.
