Abstract
Population over the age of 65 is expected to double between 1995 and 2050 in the EU-25. Reports say that 40% of the population in Japan will be over 70 years old. Rate of the seniors’ population in South Korea will reach 20% by 2026. People in the whole world are getting old. Are we ready for that?
Inspiration
The main inspiration for this project is seniors themselves. While I have been working with the project, I have been observing, talking with and listening to them. Elderly want to have fun just like anyone. Ageing is something that will happen to all of us.
Method
Elderly do not want to be distinguished, be different from younger people. However, they can feel more insecure than younger people, also easily lose balance, and sometimes need to hold on to something to support their mobility. I wanted to keep seniors walking, moving, driving, interacting more and above all, have more fun in life. I have done interviews, observations, surveys, and market research to understand users and market needs. Also I have made a full-scale prototype, a 3D-model and a scaled model. This project will come up with a full-scale model to be reviewed with seniors by the end of June 2011.
Result
I am suggesting a new type of mobility designed for seniors. I expect this will offer them a more exciting daily life.
